Effects of Hurricane Katrina

Author: Marjorie Malone

The devastation, destruction, displacement of families and loss of life in the past few weeks from hurricane Katrina has been overwhelming to watch and witness. Millions of people have watched in disbelief that this could be really happening in this country. It all seemed like a bad dream; not real at all. It was so difficult to watch. It fact as hard as it was to watch I was drawn to watch the events unfold every day. It was like I couldn't stop watching. I don't know about you but I don't think I will ever forget the scenes of families being separated and displaced, homes destroyed, the elderly and sick being moved, babies missing, people stranded on rooftops, people dying, people living on bridges, and in boxes, etc.

To make matters, people suffered for days before help arrived and the disorganization that followed was really an embarrassment to this country. This country with all its wealth, technology, and resources was not prepared for this catastrophe. What a shame. There was a total break down of communication and coordination from the government officials, the President, FEMA, Red Cross to the local officials.

In spite of the devastation I believe there are positives out of this catastrophe. Hurricane Katrina revealed to the world the poverty that exist right here in the United States. I didn't realize that so many were living in the conditions they were in that area. Some lost everything they owned which has to be enough to make you go insane but starting over could be a good thing. A fresh start can bring about a new leash on life. There has been an outpouring of love and generosity to help those who have been affected. Millions of dollars have been donated to various organizations, relief funds, Red Cross, etc. People have opened up their homes, given their time volunteering and flooding drop off centers with donations. This is what its all about showing love for your neighbor. This is what God wants to see and is pleased with. Another positive is that it also gives the cities a chance to rebuild. The crime, filth, sin, corruption, oppression, and inhumanity have been washed away. They too get a new start. The rebuilding of the city should also provide jobs for the unemployed.

Several weeks have gone by. The cities and states that took a direct hit from Katrina are cleaning up the aftermath left behind and making plans for rebuilding. Hopefully this country has learned a valuable lesson and will be better prepared to handle the next diaster. Continue to pray for all that were affected by hurricane Katrina and for those that are assisting families and in the cleanup efforts.
